INTRODUCTION TO CELLS
All living things are made from one or more cells. A cell is the simplest unit of life and they are responsible for keeping an organism alive and functioning. This introduction to cells is the starting point for the area of biology that studies the various types of cells and how they work.
There is a massive variety of different types of cells but they all have some common characteristics. Almost every different type of cell contains genetic material, a membrane and cytoplasm. Cells also have many other features such as organelles and ribosomes that perform specific functions.
Many different organisms on the tree of life contain only one cell and are known as single-celled or unicellular organisms. Their single cell performs all the necessary functions to keep the organism alive. All species of bacteria and archaea are single-celled organisms. On the other hand, large organisms like humans are made from many trillions of cells that work together to keep the organism alive.
The most basic categorisation of Earth’s organisms is determined by different types of cells. All cells can be divided into one of two classifications: prokaryotic cells and eukaryotic cells. Prokaryotic cells are found in bacteria and archaea. Eukaryotic cells are found in organisms from the domain Eukaryota which includes animals, plants, fungi and protists.
This introduction to cells will take you through the basic structure of cells, the difference between prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells and you will learn about organelles.
STRUCTURE OF A CELL

The genetic material of cells is found as molecules called DNA. The DNA of a cell holds all the information that a cell needs to keep itself alive. A DNA molecule contains a code that can be translated by a cell and tells it how to perform different tasks. A gene is a specific segment of a DNA molecule and each gene tells a cell how to perform one specific task.
The gel-like substance that the genetic material is found in is called the cytoplasm. The cytoplasm fills a cell and gives it it’s shape. The cytoplasm also allows for different materials to move around the cell. All cells have other structures in their cytoplasm that help the cell stay alive.
The cytoplasm of all cells is surrounded by a membrane called the plasma membrane. The plasma membrane separates the cell from the outside world and keeps the contents of the cell together. The plasma membrane provides a barrier that substances have to pass through before they can enter or exit a cell.
EUKARYOTIC CELLS VS. PROKARYOTIC CELLS
The main difference between prokaryotic cells and eukaryotic cells is the presence of a nucleus and organelles. Prokaryotic cells do not have either a nucleus or organelles. The word prokaryotic can be translated to mean ‘before nucleus’.
Eukaryotic cells have both a nucleus and a range of different organelles. The nucleus is a structure found in eukaryotic cells that contains the cell’s DNA. Organelles are cellular ‘factories’ that perform important functions such as building different molecules of life, removing wastes and breaking down sugars.
Having organelles makes eukaryotic cells much more efficient at completing important cellular functions. Because they are more efficient, eukaryotic cells can grow much larger than prokaryotic cells.
For a cellular structure to be considered an organelle it must be surrounded by a membrane just as the nucleus is. Prokaryotic cells contain various structures that help with certain functions,such as ribosomes, but these structures are not encapsulated by membranes and are therefore not considered organelles.
Eukaryotic cells have evolved into multicellular organisms. By specialising into different types of cells, they are able to perform functions even more efficiently and are able to keep large, multicellular organisms alive.
ORGANELLES

Important organelles include the nucleus, mitochondria, chloroplasts and the endoplasmic reticulum. Mitochondria are involved in the process of cellular respiration where sugar is broken down and converted into cellular energy.
Chloroplasts are found in the cells of plants and other photosynthetic organisms. Inside chloroplasts is where plant cells are able to use energy from the sun to create sugars from carbon dioxide and water.
The endoplasmic reticulum is a network of membranes that are attached to the membrane of the nucleus. The endoplasmic reticulum is involved with many important tasks such as producing proteins and breaking down fats and carbohydrates.

A nuclear weapon is an explosive device that derives its destructive force from nuclear reactions, either fission (fission bomb) or from a combination of fission and fusionreactions (thermonuclear bomb). Both bomb types release large quantities of energy from relatively small amounts of matter. The first test of a fission ("atomic") bomb released an amount of energy approximately equal to 20,000 tons of TNT (84 TJ). The firstthermonuclear ("hydrogen") bomb testreleased energy approximately equal to 10 million tons of TNT (42 PJ).A thermonuclear weapon weighing little more than 2,400 pounds (1,100 kg) can release energy equal to more than 1.2 million tons of TNT (5.0 PJ). A nuclear device no larger than traditional bombs can devastate an entire city by blast, fire, and radiation. Since they are weapons of mass destruction, theproliferation of nuclear weapons is a focus ofinternational relations policy.
Nuclear weapons have been used twice inwar, both times by the United States againstJapan near the end of World War II. On August 6, 1945, the U.S. Army Air Forcesdetonated a uranium gun-type fission bombnicknamed "Little Boy" over the Japanese city of Hiroshima; three days later, on August 9, the U.S. Army Air Forces detonated aplutonium implosion-type fission bomb nicknamed "Fat Man" over the Japanese city of Nagasaki. These bombings resulted in the deaths of approximately 200,000 civilians andmilitary personnel from injuries sustained from the explosions. The ethics of these bombings and their role in Japan's surrenderare subjects of debate.
Since the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, nuclear weapons have been detonated over two thousand times fortesting and demonstration. Only a few nations possess such weapons or are suspected of seeking them. The only countries known to have detonated nuclear weapons—and acknowledge possessing them—are (chronologically by date of first test) the United States, the Soviet Union(succeeded as a nuclear power by Russia), the United Kingdom, France, China, India,Pakistan, and North Korea. Israel is believed to possess nuclear weapons, though, in apolicy of deliberate ambiguity, it does not acknowledge having them. Germany, Italy,Turkey, Belgium and the Netherlands arenuclear weapons sharing states. South Africa is the only country to haveindependently developed and then renounced and dismantled its nuclear weapons.
The Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons aims to reduce the spread of nuclear weapons, but its effectiveness has been questioned, and political tensions remained high in the 1970s and 1980s. Modernisation of weapons continues to this day.

hardwood forests of India. There are five living subspecies; three others are
already extinct. Current estimates put the world population of wild tigers at
about 5,000-7,000, the most numerous race being the Bengal race, distributed
among some 18 tiger reserves and sanctuaries of India (and a half-dozen in
Nepal and Bangladesh), accounting for over two-thirds of all wild tigers.
History of big cat hybridisation:
Various hybridisations amongst cats occurred back in the days when zoos particularly wanted oddities to attract the public. These date back as far as the 1800s, when zoos were more menageries designed to turn a profit rather than carefully controlled attempts at animal conservation.
Cross-breeding in India was first recorded in 1837 when a Princess of the native Indian state Jamnagar presented a hybrid big cat to Queen Victoria.
In Europe, hybridisation can be traced back to before the First Great War, when German Carl Gottfried Hagenbeck carried out experiments with big cats and then noted that the males were likely to remain sterile.
Hybridisation in the wild:
It is extremely rare for any wild animal to breed with one from another species.
For instance, in the wild the Grant's and Thompson's gazelle live together happily in mixed herds. The species are very alike and only experts are able to discern one from the other. Despite this there are no known instances of these gazelle interbreeding.
White tiger controversy: The white tiger controversy among zoos is a small part ethics and a large part economics. For example, the tiger SSP has condemned breeding white tigers because of their mixed ancestry (most have been hybridized with other subspecies or are of unknown lineage) and because they serve no conservation purpose. Owners of white tigers say white tigers are popular exhibit animals and help increase zoo attendance and, at $60,000 each, revenues as well
